A Swedish Baroque mirror by Burchardt Precht, active in Stockholm 1674-1738
Burchardt Precht is synonymous with the production of mirrors of the highest quality.
Precht, who came from Bremen, trained as a sculptor in his brother Christian's workshop in Hamburg.
In 1674, he arrived in Stockholm, where he started working as a sculptor and worked on the interior design of Drottningholm palace.
Precht's craftsmanship was obvious, and in 1682 he was appointed court sculptor for his achievements.
In 1687-88, he made a study trip to Paris and Rome with Nicodemus Tessin the Younger, and together they subsequently introduced the so-called ‘golden baroque’ to Sweden.
Precht's later work shows a strong influence from the French architect Daniel Marot, whose models, ornaments and patterns recur frequently and whose pattern books he undoubtedly studied.
