Whalebone mount, so called Fid

This whale bone fid has blood vessel holes, which are characteristic of the bone and are more numerous near the bone surface.

Fids were among the many scrimshaw objects whalers made to pass the time during the periods of inactivity between whale strikes.

They were working tools, but many were also made into souvenirs.

This Fid is an unusual example of whale bone, one of the supplies for sail-making.
